April 21st 1881 Petty Sessions. Serious damage by Boys
(Cutting)
Extract from The Birchall Diaries
Serious damage by boys:- At the petty sessions Charles Barnfield, Thomas Barnfield, William Hulbert, Alfred Clack and Thomas Eccles, lads about 12 years of age, were charged with setting fire to a wood and damaging trees at Cranham the property of Mr. S. Dearman Birchall on the 28th March 1881. Mr. Gordon, of Gloucester presided. Evidence was given by John Higgs, Eli Fisher, and William Hannis, Labourer, that they saw the boys set fire to the dry grass and that they ran off. The witness went to put the fire out, but it took them over an hour to do so. George Davis baliff to Mr. Birchall said that about an acre of grass and bushes had been burnt and some trees entirely destroyed. Mr Gordon said Mr. Birchall instructed him to ask for light punishment to serve as a warning as these fires were of frequent occurrences in the neighbourhood and the culprits could not be detected. The bench imposed a fine of 6d and 4s 3d costs each.

I've added this family on the basis of John Bushell's will of 1720 but have not yet proved the Chippenham connection. The children's names and dates of birth fit. However the IGI does not cover Chippenham before 1688 so Edward's birth may have occurred there before that time. However John lived in Draycot Cerne but had property dealings in Great Bedwyn, including some with his grandfather and Isaac is buried in Great Bedwyn.
3/9/2003 It appears that the Chippenham connection may be a red herring and it is a coincidence that the children of the Edward in Chippenham have the same names as those of John's son Edward. The memorial inscription at Draycott Cerne for the Reverend John Bushell, given in the WRS Publication Wiltshire Memorials 1822 states that he died aged 30 and so would have been born in 1716, six years after the birth of John Bushell in Chippenham. However this could be a transcription error as it is possible that a 6 could be read as a 0. His brother Isaac's age at death does fit the Chippenham connection
21/10/2005 I think the Chippenham connection is now proved through the references given on www.theclergydatabase.org.uk which also confirms John's birth as 1710.
